Bottle-smashing incident could lead to charges

A Santa Ana man faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after a fight in the Mesa Del Mar neighborhood Sunday, Costa Mesa police said.

Police arrested Edgar Lopez-Varela, 19, shortly before 6 a.m. after he allegedly fought with another man in the 900 block of Mission Drive and smashed a beer bottle on the his face, said Sgt. Bryan Glass.

“The two men got into an argument outside, and the argument turned into a fight,” Glass said.

Police arrested Lopez-Varela on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon that wasn’t a firearm. It was unclear whether the man went to the hospital for treatment of his wounds, police said.

Lopez-Varela also has an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold placed on him.
