The deep Newport Hills Killer Whales swim team played host to the Greenbrook Gators on June 14, swimming away with a convincing 800.5-489.5 South Coast Swim Conference victory.
The win improved the Killer Whales to a perfect 3-0 in dual meets this season.
In the 9- and 10-year-old boys’ division, Taylor Cortens stood out by winning the 50-yard freestyle, 25 butterfly and 100 individual medley. He set a pool and team record in the 25 fly with his time of 14.13 seconds. Cortens had shared the old pool record. He beat the previous team record set in 1984 by Matt Hooper.
Newport Hills boys also stood out in the 7-8 division, as they swept the first three places in every individual event. The 7-8 boys also took the top three spots in both the 100 medley relay and 100 free relay. Henry Wilde led the charge, as he was first in the 25 free, 25 fly and 25 backstroke events.
Other three-event winners for Newport Hills included Sophie Wallace in the girls’ under 6 division (25 free, 25 breaststroke, 25 fly); Jake Bays in boys’ under 6 (25 free, 25 breast, 25 fly); Erika Anderson in girls’ 7-8 (25 free, 25 fly, 50 free); Madeline Musselman in girls’ 9-10 (50 free, 50 breast, 100 IM); Brett Greenlee in boys’ 11-12 (50 free, 50 fly, 100 IM); Hollace Barden in girls’ 13-14 (50 free, 50 fly and 200 IM); and Christian Garkani in boys’ 13-14 (50 free, 50 back and 200 IM).
Adding to the team win, Lauren Openshaw won the 7-8 girls’ 25 breaststroke, Natalie Wilde was first in the 9-10 girls’ 50 back, Elizabeth Russell was first in the 11-12 girls’ 50 back, Alex Musselman swam to a win in the 13-14 girls’ 50 breaststroke, Leslee Kaczmarek won the 15-18 girls’ 50 free and Annabel Farber was the winner in the 15-18 girls’ 50 breaststroke.
For the boys, Morgan Cortens won the 7-8 breaststroke and Connor McManigal took the 50 free. Mitch Dean was first in the 50 breaststroke and Nick Schroeder won the 50 back for the 9-10 boys. In the 11-12 boys’ division, Andrew Larsen won the 50 breaststroke and Kyle Cousens won the 50 back. Nick Furgatch won the 50 breaststroke and Blake Motal won the 50 fly for the 13-14 boys.
The Killer Whales also racked up team points as the boys won all of the medley relay events. They were also first in the freestyle relay in the 7-8 boys, the 9-10 boys and the 11-12 boys divisions. The girls were first in the medley relay in the under 6 division, 7-8, 9-10, 13-14 and 15-18. They also took first in the free relay in the under 6 and 9-10 divisions.
The Newport Hills Killer Whale travel to Fountain Valley today to take on the Green Valley Dolphins.
