Battle of Anteaters

Former UC Irvine golfer Scott McGihon defeated current Anteaters player Tim Cha, 1 up in the quarterfinals of the California Amateur held Friday at the Lakeside Golf Club.

McGihon, a 1991 graduate of UC Irvine, advances to the semifinals to take on Nick Delio.

Cha defeated teammate Bryan Harris, 3-and-2, in the round of 16 on Thursday.

Bernatz a top frosh

Newport Beach resident Connor Bernatz, a Mater Dei High product who played outfield as a freshman for the University of San Francisco baseball team, was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team by Collegiate Baseball.

Bernatz, also a member of the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team, hit .373 in 190 at-bats and 55 games (48 starts) for the Dons. The outfielder had 10 doubles, two home runs and 26 RBIs and added three stolen bases.

Zdenek earns Fulbright

Recent UC Irvine graduate Christina Zdenek, a member of the Anteaters’ women’s basketball team the last three seasons, is one of six UCI recipients of a Fulbright Fellowship.

Zdenek who graduated with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology, said she plans to conduct wildlife conservation research in the rainforests of the Cape York Peninsula in Australia.

She averaged 4.9 points over 29 games as a senior guard.
