Two Art & Design students get ‘Grapes’ grants
The Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Laguna Beach Rotary Club announced the recipients of scholarships to Laguna College of Art & Design students June 3 at the monthly networking luncheon.
Two $2,000 scholarships were presented to students based on criteria that included an essay submission, academic excellence and portfolio review by the scholarship selection committee.
The scholarship recipients are Shane Daley, who will be a senior in the fall majoring in fine arts and sculpture, and Enrique Escobedo, who will be a sophomore majoring in fine arts.
The scholarships were made possible by funds raised at the third annual Grapes for Grads wine tasting event in April.
“We have been very honored by our great city with the support of the Grapes for Grads scholarship event,” said Event Chairman Jeff Redeker.
“Our winners, Shane Daley and Enrique Escobedo, embody the commitment to tradition and the arts that these two organizations have supported over a quarter century in our city.”
Redeker serves as president of the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Laguna Beach Rotary Club.
Foundation gives scholarships, grants
The American Association of University Women, Laguna Beach Foundation has awarded grants to five community nonprofit organizations:
the Laguna Beach Community Clinic for its Women’s Health Day;
La Playa Center, for new ESL textbooks;
Even Start preschool program at the Boys & Girls Club;
Laguna Beach Live! for a women musicians’ concert; and
Sally’s Fund, for services to the elderly.
In addition, the foundation made a special seed grant to the Women’s Veterans’ Esteem program of Los Angeles to provide similar services in South Orange County. In total, $3,750 was awarded in grants ranging between $500 and $750 to local community organizations that applied and addressed needs related to AAUW’s mission.
The AAUW Laguna Beach Foundation also awarded three $700 scholarships to Laguna Beach High School senior girls, a $1,500 scholarship for a woman returning to Saddleback College, and will award a $1,500 scholarship for a woman returning to the Laguna Beach College of Art and Design in the fall.
At the middle school level, seven Thurston girls who will be entering eighth grade next fall received scholarships to Tech Trek, a weeklong science and math camp that takes place on six California college campuses this summer.
