ROTARIANS HAVE A BUSY WEEK AHEAD

More than 18,000 Rotarians from around the world are headed for Los Angeles this weekend for the annual International Convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Hundreds of local Rotarians will not only be attending, but also volunteering at the four-day event that begins Sunday.

Convention-goers will hear reports of Rotary International successes around the world, including the group’s major thrust of polio eradication, for which it has invested more than $625 million, the Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial and Peace Scholarship programs, and hear speakers such as Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization; Michael Josephson of Character Counts; Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and ambassador Philip Lader.

On Monday, local Rotarians from Newport-Balboa, Newport-Irvine and Newport Beach Sunrise will host international visiting Rotarians in their homes and local restaurants to give them a sample of American life. As the convention ends Wednesday night, all will leave with more knowledge of the Rotary’s role in the world and inspired to continue their good works.

WORTH REPEATING

Thought for the day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council:

“The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.

“It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream.... It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is sin.”
