May-Treanor, Walsh stay hot to win Hermosa Open

LOS ANGELES — Misty May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High star, and her teammate Kerri Walsh continued their undefeated streak in this year’s Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Tour by winning the Hermosa Beach Open Saturday.

The 2004 Olympic gold medalists have won all six tournaments they’ve entered this season and for the third week in a row, the top seeds defeated Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan. May-Treanor and Walsh beat the No. 3 seeds in the title match, 21-16, 21-14.

The title marked the 58th career domestic victory for the duo, which is two more than the total victories of the next two on the list.

On the men’s side, No. 2 seeds Matt Fuerbringer, an Estancia High product, and Casey Jennings advanced to today’s semifinals after dispatching John Mayer and Jeff Nygaard, 21-16, 21-18.

Top seeds Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers advanced to today’s semifinals with a victory over No. 4 seeds Jake Gibb, a Costa Mesa resident, and Sean Rosenthal, 15-21, 21-8, 17-15.

Mike Lambert, a Costa Mesa resident who is returning from resting an injury this weekend and teaming up with Aaron Wachtfogel to form the No. 7 team, lost to No. 8 seeds Nick Lucena and Sean Scott in two games, 21-16, 21-17. Earlier in the day, Lambert and Wachtfogel defeated Lambert’s usual partner Stein Metzger and Mark Williams, 21-10, 15-21, 16-14.
