Newport Beach firefighters were called to the scene of a car crash Friday after a truck flipped over and caught fire after running a red light, police said.
A 1979 Chevy truck slammed into a 2005 Chevy Corvette just after 6 a.m. Friday at Bristol and Birch streets when the truck driver said his brakes failed and he ran a red light, Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.
The truck was headed eastbound on Bristol Street and the Corvette was passing southbound through the intersection on a green light when they collided, police said. The truck flipped over and caught on fire. The truck driver, Alejandro Ceja of Los Angeles, was uninjured. His truck was likely totaled, Sailor said.
The driver of the Corvette, Susan Cameron of Irvine, was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian with minor injuries, police said. Her car suffered front-end damage. Newport Beach firefighters quickly put out the truck fire.
Ceja was given a ticket for running the red light, Sailor said.
