Recognizing individuals for their contributions to education, research and public service, UCI presented four people with the school’s highest honor this week.
Carol and Ralph Cicerone, James Mazzo, and Stanley van den Noort were this year’s honorees to receive The Medal. They were nominated by their peers, and then recommended by a Medal committee to be reviewed by Chancellor Michael Drake.
The Medal Awards ceremony on Oct. 3 and 4 serves as a major fundraiser to support scholarships and graduate fellowships. The first night will be at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, followed by the main event Oct. 4 at the Bren Event Center.
Ralph Cicerone was UCI’s fourth chancellor; Mazzo is a UCI Foundation Trustee. Van den Noort built the department of neurology from the ground up at UCI starting in 1970 and he plays a role at the O.C. chapter of the MS Society.
