CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The UC Irvine men’s golf team made a big move Friday in the second round, climbing 10 spots to tie for third entering today’s final round at Council Fire Golf Club.
Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters shot a nine-under total of 275 Friday and are tied for third place with Auburn at 558 after two rounds.
Georgia, the nation’s top-ranked team, fired a 13-under 271 and leads the regional at 32-under par 536. Augusta State is second at 555 in the 27-team field.
UCI, ranked 46th in the nation, leads 13 teams ranked higher in the nation’s top 50.
The top 10 teams following Saturday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Championship May 28-31 on The Kampen Course at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
UCI junior Sean Shahi carded a six-under 65 Friday and is tied for fourth at seven-under 135 following 36 holes.
Sophomore John Chin shot a two-under 69 and is eighth at six-under 136. Senior Kenny Kim also shot a 69 and is in 25th place at 140. Junior Tim Cha, with a 72, is 89th at 147 and freshman Max Greil shot 78, putting him 130th at 153.
Zach Sucher of Alabama-Birmingham shot a nine-under 62 and leads at 11-under 131.
Georgia’s Hudson Swafford is in second place at nine-under 133.

Big West Championships
NORTHRIDGE — The UC Irvine men’s team is in fourth place following Friday’s competition in the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track Complex.
Sky Johnston, Nick Mosey and Eric Nyberg earned the Anteaters’ top finishes Friday.
Johnston finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 14.38 seconds as Mike Powers of UC Santa Barbara won the event in 9:05.08.
Mosey was third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:42.67 as UC Santa Barbara’s Chris Ashley won the event in 31:21.93.
Nyberg placed third in the javelin throw with a mark of 188-11 and teammate James Lehigh was sixth at 173-11. Chris Richardson of Long Beach State was first at 217-3.
UCI’s Matt Lahti (169-3) and Kelley Hall (160-8) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the hammer throw. Long Beach State’s Robert Jennings won the event with a mark of 192-7.
The Anteater men are in fourth place with 33 points as Cal State Northridge is in first with 69.
In women’s competition, UCI’s Kendall Bruton finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:51.93 as she improved on her No. 3 mark in Anteater history. Lauren Chramosta was fifth in 11:12.59. Cal State Fullerton’s Carolyn Ellis won the race in 10:37.21
Candice Proctor of UCI finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:58.00 as Danielle Domenichelli of UC Santa Barbara was first in 36:14.49.
Alisha Misiaita placed eighth in the hammer throw at 156-5 as she bettered her No. 2 mark in school history.
The UCI women’s team is in seventh place with 15 points as Cal State Northridge leads with 78.
The conference meet concludes today.
