World surfing champion Sunny Garcia will join other professional surfers, environmental activists and an expected 2,000 guests at a benefit for the Surfrider Foundation’s Newport Beach chapter Sunday, according to event organizer Keith Scheinberg.
The gathering will take place at Triangle Square in Costa Mesa, centered on Scheinberg’s restaurant Chronic Cantina. Sponsor tents will be set up in the courtyard, and live rock bands and DJs will perform.
The Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the environmental protection of oceans and beaches, plans to use the event to garner support for its Save Trestles campaign, which seeks to stop the extension of the 241 toll road through the environmental preserve.
There also will be a fashion show and a raffle that includes a signed Sunny Garcia surfboard.
Festivities will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and all are invited.
