2nd Annual Westside Classic Basketball Tournament held
On Saturday, May 10th, the Save Our Youth (SOY) Center hosted the 2nd Annual Westside Classic Basketball Tournament.
Sixteen teams comprised of over 100 basketball players came to play 5 on 5, black top, full court basketball at Rea Elementary. All teams were assigned a different country to simulate a World Cup format. In the end, Team Mexico defeated Team Brazil in the final.
The purpose of the event was to showcase the sport of basketball in Costa Mesa’s Westside community and promote community health and fitness. Teams representing the Costa Mesa Police, South Coast Plaza Security, Estancia High School, and Newport Harbor High School joined a talented field of community teams to compete for black top superiority.
The SOY Center, a youth violence prevention center serving Costa Mesa’s teen community, advocates for community health and fitness and views it as a valuable tool in preventing youth violence. Hundreds of youth use our fitness facilities every week. These events supplement an active program of fitness, exercise, and nutrition available to our youth in the after school hours.
