YOUTH SCENE: Team Hobie just gets by Rotary, 3-2
LITTLE LEAGUE
Team Hobie posted a 3-2 victory over host Rotary on May 6 in Little League Majors Baseball action at Riddle Field.
Hobie took the lead in the second inning with a single by Morgan Lebby and two sacrifice ground-outs by Jordan Watkins and Cole Zarinelli that advanced Lebby to third base, before he stole home and scored the first run of the game.
They held Rotary at 1-0 until the bottom of the third, when Rotary’s Elijah Cassard and Adam Rodner hit singles and Cassard tied the game up with another steal at home plate.
The teams remained tied until the top of the sixth when Garrett Burk and Lebby batted in two runs by Cole Hutson and Cameron Hall, putting them at 3-1 over Rotary.
Rotary came back with another run in the bottom of the inning when Cassard scored on hits made by Rodner and George Brown. But Hobie’s key defensive plays, including a putout by Steven Lavery, left two of Rotary’s men on base and kept them from scoring anymore runs.
Also on defense, Lebby struck out 14 in 5 1/3 innings and Sundance Severino secured the save with solid pitching in the bottom of the sixth.
Hobie will play host VFW at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Riddle Field.
They are now 9-7, with a third-place league standing.
