Did you enjoy the Kentucky Derby yesterday? Fast thoroughbreds, big hats, bigger egos and communal thrills have flooded through Louisville, Kentucky crowds since 1875 for the ultimate in horse-racing events. Every year, colorful silk-clad jockeys astride million-dollar contenders compete at historic Churchill Downs while owners, trainers, breeders, officials and fans hold their collective breath. In 1789, Kentucky horse owners began to race on a track in Lexington, Kentucky, viewed only by those present. In 2008, the event is broadcast globally to great fanfare and a massive redistribution of wealth. Horse stories and racing go hand-in-hoof, so to speak. “My Guy Barbaro: A Jockey’s Journey Through Love, Triumph, and Heartbreak with America’s Favorite Horse” by Edgar Prado with John Eisenberg: After winning the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro broke his hind leg during the 2006 Preakness Stakes. Horse lovers mourned the loss of this popular animal. Here is his story.
