Matthews sick, but through to semis

OJAI — Corona del Mar High senior Fabian Matthews caught a break while advancing to today’s CIF boys’ singles division semifinals of the 108th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament at Thatcher School.

Matthews, feeling sick, according to Sea Kings Coach Tim Mang, defeated Jeremy Quiroz of Bakersfield-based Stockdale, 6-2, 6-3, in the 8 a.m. Round of 16 match at Thatcher Friday.

Matthews returned to his hotel to catch a nap, but later learned that his quarterfinal opponent, Jensen Turner from Campbell Hall, defaulted due to injury, propelling the No. 1-seeded Matthews into today’s 10:30 a.m semifinal against Reese Milner from Crossroads of Santa Monica.

Corona del Mar sophomore Ryan Peyton, competing in boys’ 16 singles, lost to David Watson of Ojai, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 16 Friday.

There will also be an all-Corona del Mar girls’ 18 doubles final today at 2 p.m. at Libbey Park.

The top-seeded team of CdM juniors Danielle Kaiden and Paige Polizois defeated Ojai’s Tanya and Naomi Noury in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1. Corona del Mar junior Karen Ishii and sophomore Kelli Feeley, meanwhile, got past Laura Fryer of Yorba Linda and Courtney Hayward of Anaheim, 6-1, 7-5, in the other semifinal.

The Estancia teams of Kendra Fisher and Jennifer Johnston, as well as Misha Brown and Natalie Plascencia, both lost in the first round.

Newport Beach resident Ali Walters advanced to the girls’ 18 singles semifinals, where the No. 3 seed will battle No. 1-seeded Kaitlyn Christian of Orange today at 9:30 a.m. at Libbey Park South. Estancia High junior Ellie Edles advanced to the girls’ 18s quarterfinals before being eliminated by Christian, 6-0, 6-3.

In the community college draw, Orange Coast College freshman Brittany Bass picked up singles wins in the third and fourth rounds Friday, qualifying her for today’s quarterfinals at Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Bass will face Santa Monica’s Natalie Kelley at 9:30 a.m. She beat Michelle Decaro of DeAnza College, 6-1, 6-4 in the third round, and Rylee Stowell of Saddleback College, 6-0, 6-0, in the fourth.

Bass also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles action. She partnered up with freshman Brittnie Furuvald, who was eliminated in the third round in singles. Bass and Furuvald won twice Friday, beating Cuesta’s Linsey Loveman and Devin Merigold, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4, and Monterey Peninsula’s Andrea Arroyo and Miho Ito, 6-1, 6-3.

Bass and Furuvald will play at 12:30 p.m. today against a team to be determined.

In men’s action, OCC’s Giovanni Villicana lost in the Round of 16 to No. 15-seeded Stewart Hutton, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5. Villicana and partner Pat Lam lost in the Round of 32 to No. 5-seeded Phil Graham and Adam Hopkins, 6-4, 6-3.

The Pirates’ Kevin Kordestani and Andy Ong lost to No. 2-seeded Hank Bessinger and Nico Ernst, 6-0, 6-3, in the Round of 32.

Corona del Mar resident Cierra Gaytan-Leach dropped a tight match in the women’s open singlesRound of 16 to Jonni Seymour of Bakersfield, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
