YOUTH SCENE:
The Huntington Beach Seahawks won the sixth grade boys’ All-Stars National Junior Basketball Evans National Tournament last weekend at various venues in Orange County.
The Seahawks won five games against opponents from the southwestern United States. Prior to playing in the Evans National Tournament, the team qualified for the event by winning both area and sectional tournaments.
At the national tournament, the Seahawks defeated All-Star teams from Irvine, Vallejo, Palo Alto, Las Vegas and East Valley, Arizona.
“I am so proud of all of the kids,†Seahawks Coach Manny Villalobos said. “Each of the boys demonstrated great heart by hustling and playing their hardest throughout the entire tournament.
“The key to our success was defense. We consistently shut down the opposing teams’ top offensive threats in each contest. Also, our rebounding was exceptional. We dominated the boards on both ends of the floor.â€
The Huntington Beach Seahawks included Jake Brodt, Jonathan Gorton, JB Hewin, Louis Juego, Connor Kotchnik, Brendan Nakaji, Daniel Patzloff, Patrick Poss, Alec Villalobos and Grant Vis.
Assistant coaches were Dave Brodt and Ken Kotchnik.
Leading scorers for the Seahawks were Juego, Nakaji, Patzloff and Jake Brodt
“We also had some great individual offensive performances over the weekend,†Villalobos said. “But overall, everyone contributed on the offensive end. It was truly a team effort.â€
