BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Beckman

CORONA DEL MAR — Jeff Carlson had 10 kills and 10 digs to help keep the Sea Kings undefeated in the Pacific Coast League with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 victory Thursday.

Dylan Davis added eight kills and three blocks, Spencer Brown had eight digs and Connor Bannan finished with 20 assists for CdM (17-5, 5-0 in league) ranked No. 3 in CIF Division II.

The Sea Kings will play against Buchanan of Clovis to open the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions today at 12:45 p.m at Santa Barbara High.

Newport Harbor 17, Edison 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High senior John Hutchinson swept all three of his singles sets at love in the Sunset League match Thursday at Edison.

The Sailors (7-4, 5-2 in league) also swept in doubles, with the pairings of Daron Arnold and Cameron Chase, McKenna Duley and Ryan McKennon, and Craig McKennon and Greg Brostek all winning three sets.

Newport Harbor has a key Sunset League match Monday against Los Alamitos, at the Seal Beach Tennis Center. The Sailors handed the first-place Griffins their only league loss in the teams’ first meeting.

LAGUNA HILLS — Sophomore Ryan Peyton dropped just one game, sweeping at No. 3 singles for the Sea Kings Thursday.

Joel Ishii and David Vu swept at love for Corona del Mar (13-3, 5-1 in league), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division I.

The Sea Kings play at University, ranked No. 1, Tuesday at 3 p.m.

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill senior Cody Gates set the school record in the discus throw in the Academy League meet Thursday at Saddleback College.

Gates’ throw of 132 feet, 3 3/4 inches broke the 2003 record of Braden Barnett, who had a 127-10 throw.

Gates also won the shot put for the Lightning, while sophomore Lion Wintemute won the 200-meter run, the 400 and was in both winning relays.

Sophomore David Penner won the 1,600 and 3,200 races for the Lightning, while junior Justin Stroud captured both hurdles events and the long jump.

NEWPORT BEACH — Nate Talbot threw a personal record 172 feet, three inches for first place in the discus Thursday against the Griffins.

Rex Nelson led the 1,600 meters with a time of four minutes, 34.2 seconds, while Jake Dawson led the 3,200 metes with 10:04.01. Cecil Whiteside took first place in the discus throw with 52-7.

The Sailors (0-3-1 in the Sunset League) will compete against Marina next week.

Saturday Newport Harbor will run at the Orange County Championships Saturday at Mission Viejo.

MISSION VIEJO — Lightning sophomore Jackie Dion set a school record in the high jump with her five-foot mark at the Academy League meet Thursday at Saddleback College.

Dion broke the year-old record of 4 feet, 10 inches, set last year by Kellee Kim. She also was second in the 300-meter hurdles and was on Sage Hill’s winning 1,600 relay team, also including Molly Vorwerck, Courtney Conlogue and Cait Williamson.

Freshman Megan Kim won the 100 and 200, as well as the long jump, for Sage Hill.

Edison’s Austin Bailey and Matt Parkevich both shot one-under 35 to share medalist honors.
