MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast College freshman Brittany Bass advanced to the singles final and doubles semifinal Thursday at Saddleback College.
Bass defeated Lisa Havish of Santa Ana, 6-0, 6-0, in the singles quarterfinals and Caroline Houston of Riverside, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals. She’ll face Erina Hung of Saddleback today at noon in the final.
Hung defeated OCC’s Brittnie Furuvald in the other semifinal, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, top-seeded Bass and Furuvald topped Vicky Andrade and Patty Vatella of Riverside, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. They’ll play Hung and partner Andrea Warren, the No. 3 seed, today at 2 p.m. at Saddleback.
Costa Mesa High product Evelyn Wallace and partner Kalin Eshelman advanced to the other semifinal for OCC with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Irvine Valley’s Emily Davies and Nedra Jenkins. The No. 4-seeded team will face No. 2-seeded Caroline Houston and Jenny Vatelia, of Riverside, today at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.

AZUSA — UC Irvine’s Trent Richert finished seventh of 26 competitors Thursday at Azusa Pacific University.
Richert totaled 6,248 points in the competition that was won by Nicholas Garza (unattached) with 6,984 points. UCI’s Kyle Peterson was forced to drop out with an ankle injury.
Richert’s marks Thursday were 17.08 in the 110-meter high hurdles, 113 feet, 4 inches in the discus throw, 12-3 1/2 in the pole vault, 160-5 in the javelin throw and 5:15.70 in the 1,500 meters.

WALNUT — UC Irvine turned in several strong performances Thursday, the first day of competition.
Tim Hearst just missed the NCAA regional-qualifying time of 9:07.00 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he placed fifth in 9:07.20. Greg Thompson finished 14th in his section of the steeplechase in 9:50.48.
Samantha Costantini finished second in her section of the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:33.28.

Saddleback 7, Orange Coast 4
MISSION VIEJO — Freshman shortstop Ryan Dunn was two for three with an RBI, but the Pirates lost their fourth straight Orange Empire Conference game Thursday at Saddleback College.
Saddleback (20-18, 6-9 in conference) led Orange Coast, 7-0, after four innings.
Drew Hillman had a double and run scored for the Pirates, who fell to 26-11-1, 10-5.

Houser (4-1) struck out nine and walked three batters.
