‘Jesus, Justice and Poverty’ speech
Jeff Pearson, who grew up in Laguna Presbyterian Church, and is a leader with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in the San Diego area, will speak on “Jesus, Justice and Poverty,” at 10 a.m. Sunday in the parlor of the church.
“Many young adults who are unaware that Jesus and the Gospels say much about these issues, they stereotype religion as oppressive, and are unaware that the Christian community is deeply concerned with social justice,” Pearson said.
Pearson will consider the shift in campus culture from a modern to a post-modern view that has occurred in Generations X and Y (children born after 1965). These young adults grew up with Desert Storm, 9/11, the War on Terror and the Afghan War. They value tolerance, teamwork, and networking, and often hold more global views than their predecessors. Many are Biblically illiterate, have ambivalent views about the future, and hunger for spirituality and social justice, Pearson said.
The public is invited to attend, and admission is free. For details contact the Rev. Kathy Sizer at (949) 494-7555. The parlor of Laguna Presbyterian Church is at the corner of Forest and Second avenues.
