Boys, girls honored

The Ocean View High boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, which repeated this year as champions of the Golden West League, had four players nab top honors on the 2008 all-league teams.

Senior guard/forward Takeshi Clifford, senior guard Brandon Ishimoto and sophomore guard Avery Johnson of Ocean View shared the boys’ player of the year honor.

Senior guard Kelsey Harris shared the girls’ player of year award with Segerstrom senior Cristina Cabezas and Orange senior Melissa Mahl.

Other Ocean View players to make the boys’ all-league team were junior forward/center Anthony Pancoast who was named second-team and freshman Billy Keller who was honorable mention.

“Takeshi was an extreme talent in rebounding and scoring, Brandon was the motor that made the car run, and Avery was that intangible guy who could do everything. They are all deserving to share this award,” Ocean View co-head coach Jimmy Harris said.

Harris, himself a former all-league player during his Ocean View career (1990-93), spoke with pride of his younger sister, Kelsey, one of three players to share the girls’ player of the year distinction.

“I thought it was awesome,” Harris said of his sister’s senior season. “I wasn’t that involved with her as a coach but as a fan, I told her after her last game that I was so impressed with her as a player. She’s just a great, all-around person and a great student.”

Joining Kelsey Harris on the girls’ all-league team were a trio of other Seahawks: senior guard/forward Clarissa Holz and junior center Rachel Sweezy made the first team and senior guard Brittany Hogan was a second-team pick.
