Davenport to play in Newport Beach July 10
Lindsay Davenport, one of the most decorated female tennis players, will play at the Newport Beach Country Club July 10.
Davenport, who recently rejoined the Women’s Tennis Assn. after giving birth to her son, Jagger, in June, will play for the Newport Beach Breakers this summer with July 10 being the lone home date at Breakers Stadium.
The Breakers hope Davenport will provide a winning touch for them. She helped lead Sacramento to its World Team Tennis-record sixth championship last year. Davenport has won three Grand Slam titles (1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon and 2000 Australian Open). She also won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in singles and has won more prize money than any other pro female athlete.
In addition to Davenport’s appearance, the Breakers will have six other home matches featuring Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin and John McEnroe.
Williams comes with the Washington Kastles on July 13, Navratilova and the Boston Lobsters will play in Newport Beach on July 21, and McEnroe and the New York Sportimes play here July 22.
Austin is set to make a special appearance for Women’s Tennis Night on July 14.
Davenport will play two matches of the Breakers’ 14 matches this year, the second being July 12 at Sacramento.
