VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Newport Harbor High senior Josh George lost his first-round match in the 140-pound division Friday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
George, who dropped to 49-9, lost to Minnesota’s Jake Bonsack, 8-3. George will face Luke Bellet of Tennessee today at 11 a.m. in consolation action of the division that includes 70 seniors from across the nation.
“It’s massive, this whole scene,” Newport Harbor Coach Dominic Bulone said of the Senior Nationals. “This convention center is huge, filled with mats from wall to wall ... Every guy here has placed high in their state tournament. There are all kinds of college coaches here. It’s such a big scene.”
George finished eighth in the California State Championships, March 1 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. He became the first Sailor to place at the state tournament since Rigo Pinon took sixth in 1998.
