COSTA MESA — Senior Jennifer Olvera threw a no-hitter against the No. 14-ranked Cougars from Missouri, striking out 10 batters to help the No. 9 Lions win the first game of a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday.
Olvera, who improved to 14-0, almost pitched a perfect game.
Jenna Bergh, who went two for three, helped the Lions (29-9) jump ahead, 2-0, on a single in the first inning.
In Game 2, Vanguard was almost no-hit until pinch hitter Amanda Young singled for the Lions off Columbia starter Valerie Teter. Teter (8-3) struck out seven in eight innings.

SAN MARCOS — Sophomore outside hitter Kevin Welch had 17 kills and freshman outside hitter Grant Keene added 15 kills in the Pirates’ 30-28, 30-25, 30-26 victory in Pacific Coast Conference play Wednesday.
Freshman middle blocker Michael Stewart had nine kills and six blocks, while freshman setter Cory Ferraro recorded 48 assists for OCC (9-5, 5-2 in conference, which plays host to Grossmont Friday at 6 p.m.
BASEBALL
Vanguard 4, Sioux Falls 3
COSTA MESA — Third baseman Keegan Freeman doubled twice and drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Lions in a nonconference game Wednesday.
Vanguard (14-15) won its third straight game. Lions left fielder Daniel Black went two for three.

SANTA CRUZ — UC Irvine is in fifth place after the first two rounds Wednesday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Michigan State has the team lead at 567 after 36 holes. UCI shot 587 in the first two rounds.
UCI sophomore John Chin shot 70-74 and is in eighth place at 144. Kenny Kim is 10th at 146 (76-70).

Salt Lake City, Utah — Trevor Dobson won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 for the Anteaters in the nonconference match Wednesday.
Zac Tsai and Stephen Stege also won in singles for UCI (8-9).
Vanguard 8, Luther College 1
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Lions swept in singles to capture the nonconference match Thursday.
Florian Lemke, Dominic Stockler, Tino Brodar, Greg Chevalier, Thomas Frank and Garrett Gillon each collected singles wins for Vanguard (9-5).
