HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sea Kings dropped a match Thursday in the middle of a grueling week of play that has yet to end.
The Chargers, ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division II coaches’ poll, defeated visiting CdM, the No. 4 team in Division II, 25-19, 25-21, 25-28, 14-25, 10-25.
The Sea Kings (12-5, 1-0) were coming off their only day of practice this week. CdM opened Pacific Coast League play Tuesday against Beckman, and won the Orange County Championships Monday after playing Friday and Saturday. The Sea Kings will host Laguna Hills tonight at 5:15 before taking a break.
This will be the first free weekend for the Sea Kings since the season started.
“I guess I should shoot the person who does the scheduling but that would be me,” said CdM coach Steve Conti.
The Sea Kings were forced into a bit of a scheduling cul de sac when Thursday became the only available day to play the Chargers, who the Sea Kings defeated in the Orange County Championships and Best of the West tournament.
CdM also implemented a new lineup, placing senior Dillon Flynn on the right side and sophomore Weston Nielsen on the left while keeping senior middle blocker Gus Ellis in the middle.
Usually the two outside hitters are flip-flopped.
The rest of the season should be a bit smoother, scheduling-wise. The Sea Kings will continue with league play and will travel to the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions April 18-19.
“I think sometimes your team has to learn how to play tired a little bit,” Conti said. “Everyone, at some point in the season, is beat up a little bit.”
