Costa Mesa Jail back to full function, still renovating

Costa Mesa Jail is still undergoing renovation, but is fully functional, police officials said.

The jail’s hours had been cut back in mid-December and shut down completely Jan. 27 to bring it up to building codes. It reopened Wednesday, and police will have their first accurate numbers on arrests and Immigration and Customs Enforcement statistics at the end of April, Sgt. Mark Manley said.

“Nothing is going to hamper our operations. We don’t have custody staff working at Newport Beach anymore,” Manley said.

The jail was shut down all of February, so police diverted everyone in custody to either Newport Beach or Orange County jails. Where they went depended on the offense, officials said. The department did as much as possible to minimize the load on Newport Beach, Manley said in February.

The ICE agent is back on site interviewing and detaining possible immigration violators, Manley said.
