SANTA ANA — Sophomore Travis Russell shot a two-under-par 34 Wednesday, tying the lowest competitive round a Sailors’ golfer has had at Santa Ana Country Club in Coach Scott Tarnow’s eight years at Newport Harbor.
Russell birdied the No. 5 and No. 8 holes and had seven pars in earning the medalist honors during the nonleague event. Tarnow said Russell matched Davis Pemstein’s 34 in 2005.

IRVINE — Camden Nicholson shot one-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings (7-4) in their nonleague match Wednesday at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course.
Taylor Keddington (38), Connor Corrigan (39), Nick Freeman (41) and Tanner Trauthen (42) also contributed to the win.

ANAHEIM — The Lightning’s Steven Choi and Jared Hoffman both shot three-over-par 38 to share medalist honors in the Academy League match at Dad Miller Golf Course Wednesday.
Mac Mace (41), Alec Maliwang (43) and Patrick Brady (46) also scored for Sage (2-3, 1-1 in league).

IRVINE — The Sea Kings opened up a three-run lead, then hung on in the Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.
Junior pitcher Matt Morris went two for four with a double and a three-run home run for CdM (3-6, 1-1 in league). Senior Kevin Holland added a two-run triple in the seventh, and was two for three with three RBIs.
Junior Michael Bloom got the win in relief, stranding the tying run at third on a game-ending University groundout.

IRVINE — CdM sophomore Michael Liao broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke as the Sea Kings cruised to victory in their Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday at Beckman.
Liao finished the race in a CIF Southern Section Division I automatic qualifying time of 59.86 seconds, breaking the one-week old record of freshman teammate John Kim, who was a close second Wednesday (59.94). Kim had originally broke the record with a 59.90 mark in the Sea Kings’ season opener against Newport Harbor last week.
Liao also won the 100 butterfly (a CIF consideration time of 55.39) and was on two winning relays for CdM. Junior Brian Schiefer also won twice, in the 50 free and 100 free.

IRVINE — The Patriots were first in seven events, but the Sea Kings easily captured the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay to narrowly win their Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday at Beckman.
The team of Allison Peotter, Elise Molnar, Kate Berry and Heather Van Hiel won the final relay in 3 minutes, 51.66 seconds, a CIF Southern Section Division I consideration time. Van Hiel also won the 100 freestyle, in another consideration time of 55.52 seconds.
Senior Carissa Dice won the 200 freestyle, while junior Victoria Kennedy took the 500 free for CdM (1-0-1).

Junior attacker Tommy Hanrahan added two goals and two assists for Newport Harbor (3-3).
Sophomore goalie Gunner Everett made 17 saves.

IRVINE — Senior Fabian Matthews swept in No. 1 singles play for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division I, in nonleague action Wednesday.
Brent Pham and Ryan Peyton led the way in doubles play, where CdM swept.
The Sea Kings (6-1) play host to Back Bay rival Newport Harbor Friday at 3 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Sophomore Hillary Bush had six goals to lead the Sea Kings on Wednesday at Eastbluff Elementary.
Senior attacker Emily Attyah added four goals for CdM (2-3), while senior midfielder Alex Hoover had three. Senior defender Lisa Weglarz caused nine turnovers.
Sophomore Zoe Salaam made nine save for the Sea Kings.

ORANGE — The Eagles couldn’t hold a two-game lead and fell, 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 19-25, 12-15, in the nonleague match Wednesday.
Sophomore Kyle Prevel had a team-high 124 kills for Estancia (2-3), which got seven kills and 11 digs from senior Ly Nguyen. Senior Scott Essen had three solo blocks, senior Adriel Robles had 10 digs and senior Barry Fryslie added 29 assists.
