Disorder in the court, the basketball court, that is

In basketball, arguing a call doesn’t usually land you in jail.

But that’s what happened to Nevious Osborne at a Costa Mesa gym early Tuesday, police said, when a disagreement over some calls during a basketball game ended with his opponent’s car being damaged.

Osborne, 28, of Huntington Beach argued with 26-year-old Michael Davis of Corona about their basketball game, which Osborne lost, at the 24 Hour Fitness on Anton Boulevard about 12:15 a.m., police said. Details of what happened afterward are sketchy, but officers arrested Osborne on suspicion of felony vandalism after Davis’ car door was nearly bent off its hinges.

Sgt. Jerry Hildeman said Osborne didn’t like some of the calls Davis made and followed him out to his car to tell him.

“It turns into a verbal confrontation with some provocation toward a fist fight that never materialized,” Hildeman said.

Davis sat in his red 2007 Toyota Camry with the door open arguing with Osborne, Hildeman said. Either Davis backed the car up or Osborne pushed on the door, but either way, the car door was severely bent, Hildeman said.

Osborne is being held at Orange County Jail.
