Hawaii def. UC Irvine
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Junior opposite Jon Stellar was the lone Anteater in double figures with 10 kills as the host Warriors posted a 33-31, 30-26, 30-27 victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match late Saturday.
The win created a split in the two-match series that began Friday, allowing No. 8-ranked UCI (11-12, 7-9 in conference) to remain percentage points ahead of No. 14-ranked Hawaii (9-10, 6-8) in the conference standings.
Junior setter Ryan Ammerman led UCI with 30 assists, while freshman middle blocker Kevin Wynne led three UCI hitters with eight kills by posting a .429 hitting percentage. Wynne also led the visitors with five block assists and had one of the ’Eaters’ two ace serves.
Junior libero Brent Asuka had a team-high 14 digs for the defending NCAA champions, who are off until playing host to MPSF co-leader Long Beach State, March 27 at the Bren Events Center.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Fresno Pacific 7, Vanguard 2
PALM SPRINGS — Sophomore Betty Tesfa and senior Olivia Amstad earned victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively, for the Lions’ only wins in the nonconference match Saturday.
Tesfa won, 7-5, retired, over Anna Karayeva, while Amstad topped Brittany Salley, 6-1, 6-1.
Vanguard, which dropped all three doubles sets to lose the doubles point, fell to 7-2, 3-1 in conference.
The Sunbirds are now 11-0, 5-0.
MEN’S TENNIS
Fresno Pacific 5, Vanguard 1
PALM SPRINGS — Sophomore Florian Lemke defeated Matt Carroll, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles to post the only triumph for the Lions in the nonconference match against Golden State Athletic Conference rival Fresno Pacific Saturday.
Sophomore Dominic Stockleer (No,. 2 singles), junior Gregory Chevalier (No. 4 singles) and sophomore Garrett Gillion (No. 6 singles) all extended their matches to three sets, before falling.
Vanguard senior Jelena Jovic fell in three sets at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6, against Fresno Pacific’s Katia Sabate.
The doubles were not contested, as the match had already been decided.
Vanguard is now 4-5, 1-2 in conference, while the Sunbirds improved to 11-0, 4-0.
