Doubleheader
AZUSA — Vanguard senior pitcher Jennifer Olvera struck out 14 and walked one in a one-hitter to lead the Lions to a 1-0 win over Azusa Pacific in the first game. But the Cougars collected 14 hits en route to a 7-0 victory in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.
Olvera remained undefeated in the circle, improving to 11-0 after the first game. Sophomore Katie Daniels, a Newport Harbor High product who doubled, scored the Lions’ run in the third inning. Junior Sarah Howe had the other hit for Vanguard, ranked No. 10.
Freshman Stephanie Leisenring went two for three with a double in the 7-0 loss, as the Lions dropped to 25-7, 3-3 in conference. APU is 12-13, 3-5.
Vanguard will play host to Hope International Tuesday in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.

Doubleheader
COSTA MESA — Junior shortstop Zach Leighton went two for two with two runs scored to lead the Lions to a 2-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap. Westmont prevailed in the first game on the strength of 14 hits and capitalizing on Vanguard’s six errors for a 7-4 victory in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday at Vanguard.
Sophomore center fielder Tyson Leighton went four for four with one run in the Lions’ loss, while junior second baseman Kyle Bondurant went two for three with one RBI. Zach Leighton went two for five with one run and one RBI and junior right fielder Jason Machado was two for five with one RBI and a double for the Lions (10-14, 5-12 in conference).
Westmont is 5-14, 3-13.
Junior third baseman Zachary Falk went one for two with two RBIs in Vanguard’s win. Lions junior pitcher Christopher Carls struck out seven and scattered five hits to improve to 3-0.
Vanguard will play at Cal State Los Angeles in a nonconference game Monday at 5 p.m.

NCAA Indoor Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — UC Irvine junior Lauren Collins finished 13th in the pentathlon Saturday.
Collins had a total of 3,882 points over the five events. Her marks were 8.95 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the high jump, 33-4 3/4 in the shot put, 17-7 1/2 in the long jump and 2 minutes, 18.64 seconds in the 800 meters.
Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State placed first with 4,496 points, Bettie Wade of Michigan was second with 4,366 and Arizona’s Shevell Quinley was third with 4,256.
MEN’S TENNIS
UC Irvine 4, Central Florida 3
IRVINE — Alex Sundling, Victor Lamm, Khunpol Issara and Trevor Dobson each won in singles for the Anteaters in their nonconference match Saturday.
Issara, a freshman, earned the team’s clinching win, defeating Central Florida’s Brock Sakey, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
The Anteaters (7-7) will play at BYU March 25.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Irvine def. Hawaii
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Senior Aaron Harrell fired a school-record seven service aces and junior Jon Steller pounded a career-high 29 kills to lead the No. 8-ranked Anteaters to a 30-28, 25-30, 34-32, 31-29 Mountain Pacific victory at the Stan Sherif Center Friday.
Harrell, a middle blocker, fired seven service aces to set the UCI match record. The old record of six was previously held by Jon Steller (2008), Matt Webber (2004), Jarrett Jensen (2002) and Mike Rupp (1999). Harrell also added five kills and three blocks.
Opposite Jon Steller led UCI with 11 kills in the fourth game. He also recorded eight digs and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Cory Yoder had a career-high 20 kills and 12 digs.
Libero Brent Asuka had a season-high 18 digs, while freshman middle blocker Kevin Wynne hit .706 with 12 kills on 17 attempts and no errors.
Outside hitter Cole Reinholm totaled 10 kills and a career-high 11 digs. Jordan DuFault pitched in six kills, while Ryan Ammerman totaled 47 set assists and nine digs. Anthony Spittle had 23 set assists.
UCI improved to 11-11, 7-8 in the MPSF, while No. 14-ranked Hawaii dropped to 8-10, 5-8.
The teams played again late Saturday night.
