ANAHEIM — Sailors junior Nick Vlahakis made a leaping catch in right field in the bottom of the seventh, helping save Newport Harbor’s Sunset League-opening win Friday at Esperanza.
“I thought it was a home run for sure,” Sailors Coach Evan Chalmers said. “It must have been a 385-foot fly ball. It was just an amazing catch.”
Chalmers said it was the first time his team had ever beaten Esperanza (4-3).
Senior Patrick Brennan earned the win for Newport Harbor (5-1-1), allowing a run and two hits in 4 1/3 innings while striking out six. Senior RJ D’Cruz pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the save, striking out three.
Dillan Freiberg was two for three with a double, scoring a run on fellow sophomore Jacob McCann’s RBI single. D’Cruz also scored on a passed ball.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Kyle Caldwell amassed 46 assists and eight kills to help lead Newport Harbor High to wins over Woodbridge and Mater Dei Friday at Huntington Beach.
The Sailors are first in their pool and would advance to the quarterfinals of the Gold Division with a win over Tesoro today at 10 a.m. at Edison.
Tucker Peleuses had 10 kills in the Sailors’ 25-22, 25-22 win over Woodbridge. Peleuses had eight kills and one ace in Newport’s 25-10, 25-12 win over Mater Dei.
Corona del Mar
HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sea Kings split their pool play matches Friday at Edison High, losing to Foothill, 25-16, 25-21, before defeating Edison, 25-22, 25-19.
Senior Dillon Flinn had six kills against Foothill for CdM (7-4), and junior Dylan Davis added four kills and three blocks.
In the match against Edison, senior Jeff Carlson had seven kills and eight digs, while sophomore Weston Nielsen and senior Gus Ellis had six kills each. Junior Connor Bannan dished out 24 assists.
Corona del Mar plays its final pool play match of the tournament, against Dana Hills, today at 10 a.m. at Edison. Coach Steve Conti said CdM would likely have to win that match to advance to a Gold Division quarterfinal match later in the day.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Kira Mitani struck out 11 and walked none, leading the Mustangs in the nonleague game Friday at Costa Mesa High.
Mitani also went three for four with three runs scored for Costa Mesa (5-3). Senior catcher Emily Pulaski was two for three with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore second baseman Jessica Hayes was two for four with a double and three RBIs.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Hayden Furey had four goals for the Lightning Friday.
Nikki Gozali, Sally Mace, Lindsay Skolnik and Christina Liu scored one goal each for Sage (3-1-1).
