Surf team places No. 9

The Laguna Beach High surf team earned a ninth-place finish last weekend at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. State Championships at Church Beach.

Five Breakers “” Porter Hogan, Bud Kuhn, Austin Cooper, Alex Mattingly and Garrett Miller “” competed in the short board division and a sixth, Andrew Congleton, competed in longboard.

Taylor Pitz and Hannah Fait competed in the girls’ short board where Pitz advanced to the final and earned a second-place finish.

In baseball

Laguna led all the way in handing Ramona of Riverside a 4-1 defeat in nonleague play at Skipper Carrillo Field.

Zach Nuno got the win to improve his record to 2-1. Dalton Sype, Mike Maxsenti, Chris Paul and Alex Gillette all doubled to account for half of Laguna’s eight-hit total.

The Breakers play a nonleague doubleheader today at Valley Christian in Cerritos and begin Orange Coast League play Tuesday against Calvary Chapel at OCC.

In boys’ tennis

Laguna was edged 10-8 by Sage Hill in a nonleague match Tuesday at Balboa Bay Tennis Club.

Jake Michaels and Benito Romeo each won two sets for Laguna at No. 1 and 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Ben Biscarrat and Jared Berkson swept (6-0, 6-3, 6-3) their Lightning opponents.

The loss left Laguna at 2-3 overall.

Previously, Laguna and visiting San Clemente played to a 9-9 score by the Breakers won the match in games, 81-74.

Bryant Schulman, subbing for Graham Unterberger, and Jake Michaels picked up key points for Laguna which atoned an 18-0 loss to the Tritons last year.

Laguna begins Orange Coast League play Thursday (March 20) at Calvary Chapel.

In track & field

Laguna’s boys dominated El Dorado but the girls’ team suffered a two-point loss to the visiting Hawks in a nonleague meet on march 6 at Guyer Field.

Some of the highlights turned in by Laguna included Casey Finnerty and Blake Hoffmeister finishing 1-2 in the boys’ 3,200-meters, Richard Mattingly taking first-place in the 1,600-meters, Sheldon Eaton claiming first-place in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, Mitch McMullin winning the shot put, Brent Linkletter hitting 20-feet-6 in the long jump and Matt Karom winning the high jump at 5-8.

Jessica Goodman took first-place in the girls’ 400.
