A 20-year-old Huntington Beach man has been released on bail following an arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, after he drove the wrong way on the 5 Freeway and crashed into a truck, authorities said.
Bassim Sleiman Elhatem of Huntington Beach was going north in his 2001 Infiniti in the southbound lanes of the freeway at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, when he hit a 1999 Dodge truck near Brookhurst Street exit, California Highway Patrol Officer Rolf Trondsen said.
Elhatem complained of pain and was taken to a hospital, then was released and booked at Orange County Jail.
The Infiniti’s one passenger, Omar Zaza, 21, of Garden Grove, was rushed to a hospital with major head injuries, Trondsen said.
The truck’s driver, Juan Santillan Jr., was not injured but his two passengers were, Trondsen said.
One suffered cuts on her hands and a bruise to the head, while the other had minor pain, he said.
