Team undefeated at tourney

The eighth-grade-and-under team from the Huntington Beach Water Polo Club survived several close matches to go undefeated last weekend in divisional play at the Winterfest Water Polo Tournament in Los Alamitos.

The team went 4-0 in tournament play, defeating teams from Los Angeles Water Polo Club, San Diego Shores, SoCal Water Polo Club and SET Water Polo Club of Saddleback/El Toro.

Top scorers in the tournament for Huntington were Kayla Robert, Ellyn Hayami, Ashley Dorman and Abigall Oshiro.

The club’s eighth-grade-and-under boys’ team posted a 2-3 tournament record beating SoCal (7-4) and VC Premier (7-6) with losses coming Los Angeles (7-6), Orange County Water Polo Club (10-6) and Newport Beach (7-4).

Huntington’s fourth-grade-and-under coed team won its first three tournament matches before falling to San Diego Shores. Wins were posed over North Irvine, SET and Commerce.

Huntington Beach Water Polo Club teams next will compete March 15-16 at the Orange County Cup at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center at Heritage Park in Irvine.

In girls’ youth basketball

The Banana Shooters, a team composed of third- and fourth-grade players, went 9-0 to complete a perfect season in PCHoops Division III play.

Point guard Lauren Markwith averaged 10 points and 10 steals per game. Ronni Hayden, Allie Greenburg and Riley O’Connell also made key contributions on offense.

Haley Higa, Shelby Harris, Ava Kime and Kylie Ortiz led the defense.
