WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 97, Hope

FULLERTON — Melissa Cook had a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Lions’ regular-season finale Monday night.

Jessica Richter added 13 points for No. 4-ranked Vanguard, which had won the previous five Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season titles, but finished second this season.

Jasmine Nault scored a game-high 35 points to lead Hope.

Point Loma Nazarene (25-2, 19-1 in conference), ranked No. 3, won the GSAC title for the first time since 1992 and for the third time ever. The Sea Lions, who defeated San Diego Christian, 64-60, Monday, will be the top seed in the conference tournament which begins Wednesday.

Hope (17-15, 8-12), the No. 7 seed, plays at second-seeded Vanguard (22-4, 18-2) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a first-round game of the GSAC Tournament.

FULLERTON — Greg Gusiff connected on five of nine three-pointers and finished with 17 points in the Lions’ Golden State Athletic Conference win Monday night.

Arvydas Vaitiekus and Greg Scott each finished with 14 points for Vanguard (20-9, 13-7 in conference).

The Lions finish tied for fourth in the GSAC and will be the fifth seed for the GSAC Tournament that begins Wednesday. Vanguard plays at Point Loma Nazarene at 7:30 p.m.

PLNU (22-8, 13-7) finished as the fourth seed with a 94-80 win over San Diego Christian.

Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE — UC Irvine’s Selaneé Henderson leads the field after Monday, the first day of the Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Country Club.

Henderson, the tournament’s defending champion, is the only player to shoot below par after carding a one-under-par 143 (71-71) Monday. The senior’s first round 71 was the best of the morning and is tied for the best round of the 36 holes with Cal’s Pia Halbig.

UC Irvine sits in third place after shooting a team total of 600 (298-302), four strokes behind host San Jose State who shot a 596 (297-299). Cal is in second with a score of 598 (299-299).

UCI senior Kim Lorenzana is tied for seventh with a 36-hole total of 149 (72-77) followed by sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha who is in 25th with a score of 154 (76-78). Freshman Hillary Packard is 29th at 155 (79-76) and sophomore Henna Cho is 35th with a first day total of 157 (80-77).

The tournament concludes with 18 holes today.
