Big West Championships
LONG BEACH — UC Irvine sophomore Lyndsay DePaul won the women’s 500-yard freestyle in four minutes, 48.93 seconds, a meet and school record, at Day 2 of the meet, Thursday at Belmont Plaza.
Freshman Miles Smith won the one-meter diving competition with his score of 289.5. Eric Nugent (222.3) and Patrick Nugent (220.6) placed second and third, respectively, while freshman Raymond Yan was fourth (215.5).
The women’s 400 medley relay team of senior Chelsea Nagata, DePaul, freshman Chelsea Greene and senior Tanya Nielsen broke the UCI record with a second-place finish (3:45.13).
UCI freshman Ann Tsuchiya was third in the women’s 500 free (4:57.66), while senior teammate Nagata was fifth in the 50 free (23.55).
Junior Will Wollam was fourth in the men’s 50 free (20.34) and freshman Garrett Thompson was 12th in the men’s 500 free (4:37.60).
Sophomore Amy Lim was 20th in the women’s 200 individual medley (2:12.66) and freshman Dustin Luchini was 22nd in the men’s 200 IM (1:58.74).
The UCI men’s and women’s teams are each third. The men’s 221 points, trail UC Santa Barbara (349) and UC Davis (303).
The women’s 207 points are topped by UCSB (317) and Pacific (216).

ORANGE — Sophomore guard Greg Scott led Vanguard with 16 points in the nonconference road game Thursday.
Greg Gusiff had 15 points and a game-high three steals for the Lions (18-7), who have won five straight.
Andrew Ellis was five for six from the field for 12 points.

LA MIRADA — Lions’ junior Derek Craddock had a two-out single and junior Jason Machado followed up with a two-run homer in the first, but it wasn’t enough in a Golden State Athletic Conference road game.
Machado finished two for two and Craddock was two for four for Vanguard 6-5, 2-4 in conference.
Junior Kenneth Hobbs had a two-run single for the Lions.
Junior shortstop Nick Rotkowitz, an Orange Coast College transfer, went four for five for Biola (8-4, 3-3).

Shane Day pitched a complete-game five-hitter in seven innings to earn the win for the Lions (6-4, 2-3 in conference) in the second game.

COSTA MESA — Lions’ pitchers Jennifer Olvera and Kelsey Boyer each had solid starts in the nonconference doubleheader Wednesday.
In the first game, Olvera struck out eight and allowed one run in four innings as the senior improved to 5-0.
Boyer (4-1), a sophomore, lasted six innings in the second game, giving up one earned run as Vanguard, which opened the season ranked No. 10 in the NAIA poll, is now 12-2.
Freshman catcher Angela St. Croix led the way offensively in both games. She went three for three with a double and three runs batted in in the first game and finished two for three with a double two RBIs in the second game.
Southern Oregon fell to 0-6.
