Newport Beach Chargers 5, Yorba Linda 0: The Chargers continued their undefeated season with the shutout victory. The scoring was started by Kate McFetters early in the contest. Katherine De La Torre and Katelyn Mead each added a goal. Megan Daly contributed with two goals, the second coming on a beautiful header. Berkley Van Oostendorp, Britney Myers and Emily Nall assisted on the goals. The defense, anchored by Emily Cook, Jenna Nulty and McKenna Johnson, was superb, allowing only a couple of shots on goal. Tyler Stupor played an excellent game in goal.
Newport Beach Chargers 2, South Irvine 0: The Chargers recorded their fifth shutout of the all-star season thanks to the efforts of Cook, Mead, Nulty, Van Oostendorp and Johnson on defense. Newport tallied twice against the previously unbeaten South Irvine team. Both goals were scored from the left wing by Kate McFetters. Lea Phillips, Britney Myers and Megan Daly assisted on the goals and Emily Nall put constant pressure on the Irvine defense from her right wing position. De La Torre played a very strong game at left midfield. Stupor was solid in goal for the Chargers, stopping several scoring chances by the powerful opposition.
Girls under 10 (Gold All-Stars)
Newport Beach Golden Girls 3, Tustin 1: Jojo Stassel scored twice to lead the Golden Girls. The Golden Girls scored the first goal of the game when one of Jaci DeFeo’s numerous shots finally got by the sure hands of Tustin’s goalkeeper. The Golden Girls’ defense was able to shut down Tustin’s offense in the first half. Stassel decided one goal wasn’t enough, so she went on the attack in the second half. She sliced a slow roller in on the left side for a goal with the help of a charging Bailey Scalzo. Stassel’s second goal was just the opposite of the first: pure power. Tustin kept the Golden Girls on their toes with a quick goal after the last substitution break, and they continued playing very aggressively. The Golden Girls weren’t going to be denied their first win of the All-Star season, so the defense stepped up to seal the deal.
Newport Beach Golden Girls 6, Yorba Linda/Placentia 0: There was no energy lost for the Golden Girls in their second game of the day. The girls had that golden touch in the first half as excellent passing led to goals by Emily Fay, Peyton Groves, DeFeo and Reilly Cox. Superior ball control in the second half set up goals for Emily Halphide and Kate Hefner. Kelly McFetters, Stassel, Scalzo and Rylie Siegfried played outstanding defense to ensure a shutout.
Girls under 10 (Silver All-Stars)
Tustin 3, Newport Little Breakers 1: The game opened with several orchestrated attacks by the little Breakers’ forward line of Destry Comp, Siena Ward and Haley Martinez. Late in the first quarter, Comp fed Ward for a shot and score against Tustin. Tustin, not to be deterred, came right back and scored two of its own. The second and third quarters saw countless Little Breakers attacks aided by the exceptional ball handling of Zoe Coney, Paige Fultz and Jackie Singer. Several timely ball-clearings were manifested by Grace Vandervort, Faith Harper and Mackenzie Porteous. Both teams were exhausted by the fourth quarter, but Tustin found one more score in the fourth.
Newport Little Breakers 3, Corona Del Mar 2: Little Breakers forwards Comp, Ward, Singer and Martinez pounded the opposition throughout the game. The forward line set right to work, shooting on the CdM goal. Fed with a big, well-placed pass by Coney, Ward scored the first goal. With two more feeds by goalie Vandervort and Fultz, Ward scored two additional goals. CdM got on the board with two scores of their own. The Little Breakers’ Harper and Porteous helped to keep the opposition from scoring again.
