COSTA MESA — The Mustangs avoided going down in school history as the lone team to go winless during the regular season.

Senior guard Mikey Molina scored a team-high 12 points and played solid defense in the Orange Coast League game Friday that ended Costa Mesa’s season at 1-26, 1-8 in league.

“Finally we got one,” said Costa Mesa first-year coach Kevin Palmer, whose team finished in fourth place in league. “It was Senior Night and they decided to honor the five seniors after the game. Now it makes sense.”

Palmer said he expects to be back next year. He was happy with his team’s defensive and rebounding efforts that ruined Calvary Chapel’s chance to lock down second place, as it held the edge before the night with two wins against Estancia.

“I know we helped our rivals,” said Palmer of the Eagles, who clinched second Friday by upsetting league champ Laguna Beach and with Calvary Chapel’s loss. “But we won and the guys are happy about that.”
