Chances of a sunny weekend in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa are diminishing as a storm originating in the Gulf of Alaska approaches.
Saturday forecasts are mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain after 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Costa Mesa and Newport Beach will be hit mostly on Sunday when chances of rain will be 70% in the morning and rising to 80% in the afternoon, said Dan Atkin of the National Weather Service.
The area can expect a quarter to a half an inch of rain total, most of it on Sunday.
Winds will be moderate with breezes throughout the day and gusts reaching 20 miles per hour, according to Atkin.
Rain should begin to taper out Sunday night before sunnier weather on Monday.
Surfing conditions for the weekend are expected to be poor with large tide swings and swells predicted at 3 to 4 feet, according to Surfline.
