WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

COSTA MESA — Pirates sophomore Courtney Ford made the game-winning put-back at the buzzer, leading Orange Coast to the wild double-overtime Orange Empire Conference victory Friday night at OCC.

Ford finished with a career-high 38 points and added 14 rebounds for OCC (23-3, 7-1 in conference), which won a double-overtime home conference game for the second time in a week.

The Pirates, ranked No. 5 in Southern California and No. 10 in the state, had defeated Saddleback, 77-74, on Jan. 25.

Sophomore point guard Rachael Maulit also had a career-high 19 points and dished out nine assists for the winners, who stayed atop the conference. Simone Ibbotson added 10 points.

Tiffany Smith led Irvine Valley (15-9, 4-4) with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

TORRANCE — Sophomore Kevin Welch had 14 kills and two aces to lead the Pirates to a season-opening, 30-20, 30-23, 30-25, nonconference win Friday night.

Freshman Tucker Alleborn added eight kills, while freshman setter Corey Ferraro had 28 assists for OCC.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

LINCOLN, Neb. — UC Irvine junior Lauren Collins was fourth in the pentathlon Friday at the 33rd annual Frank Sevigne Husker Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Collins had 3,792 points, a provisional qualifying mark for the NCA Indoor Championships Mar. 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Collins tied for first in the high jump with a mark of five feet, seven inches. Collins ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.06 seconds and threw her shot put 34 feet and five inches. She ran the 800 meters in two minutes, and 21.44 seconds, and finished with a mark of 17 feet, nine inches in the long jump.

AQUATICS

UC Irvine def. Cal State

Northridge

IRVINE — The mens’ and womens’ Anteater aquatics teams both defeated Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The men won, 146-85, and the women’s team won 166.5-63.5.

The UCI men took top billing in 12 of 13 events, while the Anteater women won 12 of their 13 events as well.

Senior Eddie Erazo won both the 100 fly (51.35 seconds) and the 100 back (49.17). Senior Chelsea Nagata won the 100 fly with a time of 55.29 and the 100 back (59.77).

Sophomore Chris Rosales had the best times in the 200 IM (1 minute, 56.63 seconds) and the 100 breast (57.23), while freshman diver Miles Smith won the one-meter (248.26) and the three-meter competitions (335.10).

COSTA MESA — Senior Jen Olvera struck out 11 in six innings of work and hit a three-run home run, helping the Lions earn their season-opening victory over LaVerne Friday at Vanguard in the first game of a doubleheader.

In Game 2, sophomore second baseman Jennifer Bergh and sophomore third baseman April Glenn each had two hits and two runs scored as the Lions (2-0) bounced back from a 3-0 deficit after half an inning.

Sophomore Kelsey Boyer earned the win in the second game, giving up three earned runs in four innings pitched before giving way to Olvera.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Matt Hauser, a Corona del Mar High product, pitched eight strong innings for the Pirates in the nonconference win Friday at OCC.

Hauser picked up his second win of the year, allowing no runs and scattering four hits for OCC (4-0-1). Offensively, freshman Drew Hillman went three for four with a run and two RBIs, while freshman Brett Wallach (two RBIs), sophomore Cory Olson and Corona del Mar High product Austin Elliott, a freshman, all tallied two hits.
