A three-day symposium on clean-energy technology and its emerging presence around the globe started Monday at UCI, university officials said.

Led by Scott Samuelsen, UCI’s director of Advanced Power and Energy Program and National Fuel Cell Research Center, the campus plays host to the eighth gathering of international authorities on advanced power programs and technology readiness.

From 8 a.m. to noon today at the Fairmont Newport Beach Hotel, scientists from the United States, Europe, China, Singapore and Korea will discuss their respective countries’ advanced power systems. Starting at 1 p.m. and ending at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Southern California Edison’s Russ Neal will discuss the effects new energy technology could have on the power grid.
