Girls under 14 (All-Stars)
Newport 1, South Irvine 0: Monika Petersen scored for Newport with an assist by Maddie Grant in the second quarter to win on Saturday.
Forwards Stephanie Joyce, Tamara Myers, Sara Bradbury and Hannah Beek attacked the ball all game. Page Keys, Rochelle Bowlin and Paige Bell-Wheelan had stellar plays as midfielders and big boots up the field. Megan Farley, Kimberly Watanabe, Janet Zelpa and Andrea O’Campo all had key plays to keep the ball out of the net. Audrey Bruscia had eight saves.
Girls under 9
Breakers finish second at tournament: Thanks to the generosity of their sister Under-10 Silver All-Star team, the girls’ under-9 Breakers had an opportunity to play in the Rich Bailey Friendship Tournament in Anaheim last weekend against other under-9 teams from Southern California.
The Breakers finished second overall, scoring nine goals in four games. Siena Ward scored five goals, most on breakaways. Destry Comp scored twice, while Jackie Singer and Kianna Ghamari each added one more. Haley Martinez rounded out the offense with a strong effort. Faith Harper, Paige Fults, Gharmari and McKenzie Porteous played stellar defense, not only stopping the opponent’s offense, but connecting with teammates on passes. Zoe Conley tackled ferociously in the middle, setting up many scoring opportunities. Grace Vandervort played strong in goal, holding the opponents almost scoreless.

Division 2 (5th & 6th grade)
Runnin’ Rebels 36, Bears 34 (OT): The Rebels won their second game of the season in a thriller over the Bears.
The Rebels trailed throughout, but kept the pressure up and came away with a big win. Trevor Schwartz and Jay Damon led a great team effort with scoring, rebounding, assists and defense while Quinn Bassler continued to be a force in the paint. Brady Shockey and James Pflughaupt’s strong all-around play helped seal the win in the end and Richard Hagestad played injured throughout the contest. The Bears were led by the stellar play of Alex Wilde and Matt Ctvrtlik.
Red Storm 34, Wildcats 28: The Red Storm picked up their third win of the season with a close-fought victory over the Wildcats.
“The entire Red Storm team played great defense and this contributed to the win,” Red Storm Coach Geoff Morris said.
Alex Moore had a season-high nine points, while Taylor Cortens and Steven Barela added eight each. Max Kline led the team in assists and Chris Cordes came up with two key rebounds in the final period.
Warriors 38, Bruins 25: The Warriors (5-0) remained unbeaten behind balanced scoring, great ball movement, strong rebounding and relentless team defense.
All nine Warrior players made contributions throughout the game led by Cole Norris, Milad Rohani, TK McWhertor and Preston Dexter. Trent Dill and Will Van Dalsem led the team in rebounds, while the defense was led by the hustle of Matt Hurst, Jake Hastings and Ryan Knapp. Ryan Cargile, Robby Bracho and Hagen Truninger played well for the Bruins in the loss.
Zips 38, Tigers 25: The Zips improved to 5-0 with the win.
Nolan McCarthy was very active on the boards and created numerous steals with his strong defensive presence. Daniel Henry worked hard on both ends of the court while Clint Henderson, Luke Shea, DaSean Lewis and Matt McKinnon all contributed in the win. Connor Sage led all scorers with 16 points while Joey Cooper led the Zips in assists with five. The Tigers were led by the strong play of Kevin and Mark Manchester, and Sam Younesi.
Trojans 39, Spartans 34: Michael Karamardian scored 15 points to help the surging Trojans improve to 4-1.
Kavi Sakraney added nine points, while Grant Nutt played great interior defense and rebounded well in the big win.

7th grade
Newport-Mesa Sailors 51, Aliso Niguel Sharpshooters 41: The Sailors improved to 5-1 as Connor Kelly had his best game of the season with 11 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Drew Olson added eight points and seven rebounds. Jackson Pries and Blake Motal combined for 15 points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots while dominating the paint. Nick Hannah, Reid Meckler, Robbie Rettig and Blake Grable all played well in the big win.
Newport-Mesa Sailors 74, Fullerton Fury 39: Blake Motal turned in his best performance of the season with a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Jackson Pries’ 12 points and 10 rebounds were season-bests as well. Connor Kelly broke open a close game in the second with two big three-pointers and a key steal. Robbie Rettig was all over the court with six steals while finishing with 11 points. Reid Meckler ran the offense with precision while Ryan Grable hit some key baskets and distributed the ball well. Nick Hannah also played key minutes.
