Health agency helps residents to quit smoking

Have you already blown that New Year’s resolution to stop smoking?
Don’t worry, the Orange County Health Care agency has a plan.
Free smoking cessation services — including classes, telephone counseling, support groups, and one-on-one counseling — are available at a number of locations throughout the county.
The services are offered in English, Spanish, and Japanese.
“We know it’s not easy to quit smoking, and that’s why we want people to know that help is available,” said Dr. Eric Handler, county health officer.
“By quitting smoking you will not only improve your own health, you will improve the health of others around you who may have been exposed to second-hand smoke.”
Organizers point to a new law, effective July 1, that subjects individuals to a $100 fine if they are caught smoking a cigarette with a minor in the car — suggesting the county’s new programs might help residents’ wallets, as well.
More information about the county’s smoking cessation programs is available by calling 1-866-NEW-LUNG (639-5864).
