Parents can request school transfers for kids

The Newport-Mesa school district begins open enrollment Tuesday, school officials announced. From Tuesday to March 15 parents can fill out applications to transfer their children to any other school in the district. Applications are available in Spanish.
During open enrollment, parents can request for their children to transfer to another school for the following year.
Last year there were more than 500 applications, educational services program support employee Tere Russell said.
Applications are collected for two months and then assigned random numbers like a lottery, she said. So, applying early does not give students an advantage.
Children with siblings at the school they are applying to do get priority though, she said. Parents can apply to as many schools as they like.
Each school’s applications are randomized for selection.
Applications will be numbered on March 17. For an application go to www.nmusd.k12.ca.us or visit district offices at 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa. For more information call (714) 424-5000.
