COSTA MESA — Eagles senior Eric Duarte scored on an assist from junior Jose Garcia five minutes into the first 10-minute overtime period in the Orange Coast League opener for both teams Friday at Costa Mesa.

There are two periods for overtime play in the OCL.

Estancia junior Jose Reyes scored the game’s first goal after connecting on a penalty kick in the 27th minute. Reyes drew the penalty after he was tripped from behind going into a one-on-one with the goalie.

In the 57th minute, Costa Mesa scored, taking advantage of an Estancia miscue. An Estancia player headed a ball back toward his goalie, but the ball went over the goalie’s head and Mustangs freshman Arturo Delgado tapped it in to tie the score, 1-1.

But Duarte scored the game-winner, misdirecting the goalie to his right and booting the ball into the lower left corner.

In addition to the spectacular goal, Estancia Coach Gannon Burks said he was proud of the way Duarte kept his cool early in the second half. A Costa Mesa player violently pushed at Duarte knocking him to the ground and causing him to bleed, Burks said. Duarte did not retaliate. The official from the other side of the field issued a yellow card to the Costa Mesa player and the head referee eventually gave the player another yellow after seeing Duarte’s blood.

Overall, Costa Mesa (1-5-0) was assessed four yellow cards and one red, while Estancia (4-4-3) had two yellow cards that was a red for an Eagles’ player.

Costa Mesa senior goalie German Briseno had eight saves, while Estancia ’keeper Andreas Villareal had four saves.
