CORONA DEL MAR — Junior goalkeeper Zak Maurer-Erickson had 15 saves in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday.

Sophomore forward Reed Williams scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute for CdM (4-6-2, 1-0 in league).

Senior midfielder Mitchell Williams scored shortly after on an assist from senior forward Paolo Iaccarino.

CdM will play host to Laguna Hills Friday at 3 p.m.

IRVINE — The visiting Sea Kings held a 12-0 halftime lead before cruising in the Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday.

Juniors Victoria Kennedy and Leslee Kaczmarek led CdM with four and three goals, respectively.

Senior Corinne Treadaway had four steals and junior Kate Berry had two assists for the winners (7-5, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division I preseason poll.

The Sea Kings open the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Friday at 1:55 p.m. against Montebello.

NEWPORT BEACH — Eight Sailors scored, including five players with at least two goals, to pace the hosts in their Sunset League opener Wednesday.

Sophomore Kate Klippert had four goals, while junior Nicolina McCall added three to help Newport Harbor improve to 12-1, 1-0 in league.

Sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist contributed three assists and three steals, while senior Erin Reid had three steals to go with her one goal for Newport Harbor.

McCall also produced two steals for the winners, who face El Toro Friday at 3:45 p.m. in the first round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Senior Morgan Vickers made six saves to lead three Newport Harbor goalies.

CORONA DEL MAR — The host Sea Kings were unable to answer a fast-break layup by Beckman with 40 seconds left in their Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday night.

CdM led, 34-33, but the layup gave Beckman a one-point edge.

Beckman fouled CdM on the next possession, but the Sea Kings missed the game-tying free-throw attempt.

The Patriots turned the ball over to give CdM another chance to regaint he lead with about 11 seconds left in the game, but the Sea Kings (7-12, 0-1 in league) failed to get a shot off.

CdM was 10 of 21 from the foul line.

The Sea Kings play host to Laguna Hills Friday at 5:30 p.m.
