Newport Harbor fouls up tournament championship
Four Newport Harbor High players fouled out in the championship game of the Bambauer Classic, and the Sailors fell 71-45 to Rocklin to take second place in the tournament.
Officials called 52 total fouls in the game, and senior Kyle Caldwell, junior Michael Helfrich, senior Max Volz, and senior Taylor Friend all fouled out in the third quarter Saturday. Senior Jamie Galey had a technical foul.
Newport Harbor (10-5) trailed 29-17 at halftime, but the Thunder extended the lead even farther when Rocklin shot 22 free throws and scored 32 points in the third quarter.
The Thunder held Caldwell, usually the Sailors’ leading scorer, to just two points. Helfrich and sophomore Cecil Whiteside led Newport Harbor with ten points each.
Caldwell and Volz were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Sailors will open Sunset League play Friday at Esperanza at 7:30 p.m.
