Marina breaks own mark

During the 2006-07 boys’ prep basketball season, Marina High shattered the California state record for three-point baskets in a single game, hitting 28 in a win over Barstow Dec. 13 of last year and again later that month during a tournament game in Hawaii.

Well, that record lasted just one year, because a new state single-game mark for three-point baskets was established Saturday.

By whom? Marina, of course.

The Vikings set the new standard by connecting on 29 tries Saturday during a 103-59 rout of Norwalk in consolation-round play at the Beckman Tournament.

The Vikings also set a national record by attempting 97 three-point shots in the game.

Sophomore Brendan Holmes, son of Vikings head coach Roger Holmes, hit 13 threes in the game to set a Marina single-game record.

Holmes finished with 39 points and also had five assists.

Junior guard Garrett James hit nine three-point shots and netted 35 points and defensively came up with seven steals. Senior Dion Douglas had nine assists, sophomore Tyler James had seven assists and Chad Lewis added eight points and four rebounds.

“We broke the record by creating a steady stream of turnovers and finding the open man,” said Marina Coach Roger Holmes, whose team is 5-4 on the season and has 130 three-pointers, an average of 14.4 per game. “We didn’t shoot all that well, but the guys did a great job of getting offensive rebounds and getting extra shots.”

But Monday, Marina had trouble finding its shooting touch in the first half against visiting Westminster, went into a 14-point hole at the half, staged a second-half comeback but eventually lost, 84-79.

Marina hit 12 three-point shots in the nonleague game.

“We are starting to play much better offensively and our defense is very tough,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “We are excited about where we are now.”

Edison, along with Huntington Beach, is in Phoenix this week to compete in the Nike Tournament of Champions, an event Edison Coach Corey Kelly said is the top girls’ basketball tournament in the nation.

Edison has played in the past five events and reached the championship game three years ago.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to play in the Nike Tournament of Champions,” Kelly said. “We know the tournament is very strong, but we have been improving everyday and hope to be competitive.

“It is the No. 1 girls’ basketball tournament in the nation. Teams come from all over the nation.”
