HARBOR TOPS CDM

Newport Harbor High sophomore Ryan Iverson produced a hat trick to lead the Sailors to an 11-4 victory in an Battle of the Bay between junior varsity A teams, the highest level at which both teams compete, in Interschlastic Hockey Federation competition Wednesday at the Roller Hockey Center.

Senior Cameron Monahan, junior Ryan Panella and sophomore Cody Campbell scored two goals for Newport Harbor (4-1).

Richard De St. Jean and Kurt Newmeyer also scored for the winners, who received 25 saves from goalie Tony Nasca.

Monahan had six assists and Brett Olinger two for Newport Harbor.

Corona del Mar fell to 2-3.

CdM JV tennis excels

The Corona del Mar High junior varsity girls’ tennis team recently captured the Pacific Coast League championship, capping an undefeated season.

The Sea Kings finished with a record of 19-0, also posting nonleague wins over Mater Dei, Mira Costa, Marlborough, Laguna Beach, Valencia, Dana Hills, Troy, Northwood and Sage Hill.

Eleven Corona del Mar players also advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific Coast League individual tournament.

Betsy Murray won the league singles championship by defeating teammate Karoline Wang, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Corona del Mar’s Tiffany Mai and Marie Rodofa fellow Sea Kings Jessica Beyer and Nikki Waniak, 6-4, 6-2, to win the league title.

The team was coached by Jody Young, the mother of former Corona del Mar doubles standouts Miranda and Hayley Young, who are twin sisters.
