Mayors’ Cup games
Girls under 14
Green Lightning 3, Costa Mesa 2 (Sunday): The Green Lightning took third place in the Mayors Cup, winning against Costa Mesa. Gigi Light and Monika Petersen scored for the Lightning, with assists from Tamera Myers and Paige Bell-Wheelan. Page Keys, Megan Farley and Rochelle Bowlin attacked and contributed on defense. Great defensive plays and big kicks were made by Andrea Ocampo, Hannah Beek, Lauren Steinke and Janet Zelpa. Michelle Brookes and Lauren Steinke had four saves each.
Green Lightning 2, Costa Mesa 2 (Saturday): The Green Lightning came back from a 2-0 deficit to score both goals in the fourth quarter. Petersen and Bell-Wheelan knocked the ball in the net for the scores. Farley, Beek and Bowlin excelled at midfield. Light and Keys led the attack on offense.
Green Lightning 4, Corona del Mar 0 (Saturday): Keys scored the first goal in the second quarter and Petersen followed with two goals. Myers tapped in the final goal. Zelpa and Brookes combined for 10 saves. Farley, Myers and Steinke protected the goal.
Girls under 12
Strikers 3, Pink Pirates 1: Sabrina Sanchez scored two goals and Sierra Stump scored one for the Strikers in their Mayors’ Cup final win over the Pink Pirates, also from Region 97. Kate Mcfetters and Emily Nall each had an assist. Kilie Stivers, Lauren Hanson, and Cortlynn Clement played halfback with shots on goal and set up scoring opportunities. Olivia Muscatello, Michelle Duchus, Camille Christensen, Brooke Hinton, and Alana Aguirre all played great defense turning away scoring chances. Alex Vasquez played the entire game in goal with several stops and great punts. The Strikers now have a 15-0-1 record.
Girls under 10
Breakers capture Area Q Plus gold: The Newport Beach Breakers girls’ under-10 Plus team, captured the gold by winning the Area Q Plus tournament over Corona del Mar, 2-0, Sunday at Mariners School.
The Breakers, who finished the regular season in first place, faced a tough Costa Mesa squad in the first round on Saturday. Holly Clemence scored the first goal with a volley off a corner kick in the second quarter. Toni Holland scored the goal of the tournament with an angled header from a cross by Taylor McMorrow, increasing the Breaker’s lead to 2-0. Bailey Prado scored a third-quarter goal and the Breakers cruised to a 3-1 win.
In the second round, the Breakers topped South Irvine 4-1, receiving two goals from McMorrow and additional scores from Holland and Grace Clemence. The win placed the Breakers into the Sunday final against Corona del Mar. In the first quarter of the final ,the Breakers peppered the CdM keeper with seven shots only to be denied each time.
The Breaker defense led by Gigi Woodall, Emma Griffith and Brandi White stiffled any advance by CdM allowing the Breaker offense to maintain possession of the ball. Prado scored in the second quarter and the Breakers led 1-0 at halftime.
Peyton Espley-Jones scored off a beautiful cross from McMorrow and the lead increased to 2-0. Jordan Blanchfield, Holland, Espley-Jones and Grace Clemence continuously connected around the CdM defense creating numerous scoring chances for the undefeated Breakers. Emily Goltz and Espley-Jones both played solid in the goal. The Breakers, coached by Kirk McIntosh, finished the AYSO Plus season with a 15-0-1 record winning the McMillan tournament and the Area Q championship.

Girls under 12 (Adavanced Play Program)
Costa Mesa ends season as champions: The Costa Mesa Advanced Play Program team dominated its last two games to win first place.
Gracie Dimond and Jayme Krohnfeldt shared goalie duty, keeping both Laguna Hills and North Irvine scoreless. Forward Jackie Tanner consistently moved the ball forward, Alondra Novoa scored three goals, Jaquelyn Hubbard added one and Cristina Tuer finished with one goal to bring the team to victory.
Strong and relentless defense by Emily Gruber, Claudia Huerta, Emily Grady, Marlene Calderon and Stephanie Madrigal gave exceptional strength to the back line. Halfbacks Sophie Shambrook, Kayla Stevens, Amy Heil and Anna Vivanco kept the play aggressive.
Boys under 8
Golden Hawks 3, Scorpion Kings 2: The Golden Hawks defeated the Scorpion Kings in a well-played game for both teams. Liam Jason began the scoring with a perfect penalty kick that landed in the left corner of the opposing goal. A.J. McLean and Cailan Nixon demonstrated their versatility by playing well everywhere on the field. Tristan Trepas continued the scoring with the second goal and played excellent defense. Elias Walk played well at all positions. Daniel Hendrickson made a prefect throw-in to Gabriel Lindsey and Lindsay gently nudged the ball past the outstretched arms of the diving goalkeeper for the deciding goal. Myukah Ospina proved to be a stopper in goal in the second half.

Newport-Mesa 43 Los Alamitos 39: The Newport-Mesa Sailors opened the season with an overtime road win.
The game was closely contested throughout until the Sailors took over in the overtime period. Robbie Rettig led all scorers with 12 points including a huge three-pointer in overtime. Nick Hannah and Drew Olson combined for 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Blake Motal and Jackson Pries manned the paint while blocking four shots and grabbing a combined 12 rebounds. Reid Meckler and Connor Kelly ran the offense with precision combining for seven points and seven assists while Blake Grable had two key steals and a big three-pointer in the first quarter.
