Learning to harmonize

Edison High School has been showing off its performing arts programs in a serious way recently, particularly with the first student musical in decades last year. But the latest performance at the school will have the teens sit down and watch — not to mention learn.

The nationally performing Alley Cats a cappella ensemble is showing up Tuesday for an evening concert at the school.

The group, which has performed at the White House for President Clinton as well as in Las Vegas opening for Jay Leno, will show up ahead of time to give choral students a clinic in making music for a living.

Students from Edison and several other Huntington Beach schools will get a chance to learn about what it’s like to be a working musician, Edison choral director Joe Kral said.

“The guys during the day will give a clinic which will talk about the business,” he said. “Of course they’ll talk about vocal production and making a living singing professionally. The kids will get an insight into what it’s really like for people professionally as a musician.”

Choral booster club President Alexis Booher said she aimed for the Alley Cats because they combine exceptional talent with a positive message for youth.

“The message they’re going to bring to the kids are to know your musical fundamentals,” she said. “The music industry is not American Idol; it’s not what you see on TV. Then they’re going to sing these incredible songs.”

Booher’s daughter Jordi, who takes music theory and is in the chamber ensemble, says she’s ecstatic about seeing the group.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for them to teach us and have that clinic. I’m going to have all my friends go and everything.”

The first for the school is also a first for its gym, Kral said.

“This is the first time Edison High School’s had a full-blown concert there,” he said. “Getting the gym was the hardest part.”
