Organizers of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines Golf Tournament sponsored by the city of Newport Beach said the event had raised about $93,000 to help troops and their families as of Monday afternoon.
“The support the community showed will make the season a lot brighter for many families,” said Marilee Jackson, Newport Beach public information officer.
More than 100 organizations donated goods or services to the tournament, which was hosted by Newport Beach Country Club on Veterans Day.
Newport Beach officially adopted the battalion in December 2003.
Although the bulk of the 1st Battalion will remain in Iraq for several more months, a small group representing the entire battalion was on hand at the tournament.
